Education Students Present Papers
in Conferences

   Student groups from the College of Education participated in the 2nd Annual International Conference on Education (ICEDU) 2016 of The International Institute of Knowledge Management (TIIKM) held on April 21-22, 2016 in Bangkok, Thailand sponsored by the University of Colorado. This year’s theme was “Transforming Today’s Educational Landscape”.

   Ten undergraduate research papers from UST were accepted for oral presentations, 2 poster presentations, and 3 virtual presentations. The oral paper presenters coming from the Elementary Education program were Joan Ulat; Angelica Cac; Moungiean Lee; Angelica Mae Balanza; Bernadette Marie Emparado; Victor Benedict Vienne Garcia; Nasherine Joson; Marie Abigail Magno; Regina Kristina Prieto; Ina Margaret Calalo; Allysa Bridgette Aragon; Charlene Sese; Ma. Leslie Concepcion; Alexandra Nicole Fulgencio; Vincent Luis Cayabyab; Rinna Beatrice dela Paz; Marie Ongpin; Steven Ryley Hernandez; Isabella Francesca Pangilinan; Rikki Lauren Aquino; Paulene Coronado; Margaret Ann Felarca; Christine Victoria Novilla; Ma. Rebecca Fatima Ramirez; Arielle Nicole Serrano; Renee Anonna Vergara; Erika Jillian Camon; Lenore Hailey Keh; and Kaira Maitem. The research studies of the preschool education groups were about children’s view of the caring behavior of teachers, and children’s concept of friendship. The special education groups’ research undertakings were qualitative in approach, some of which delved on self-regulation; concept of ambition; student engagement and turn-taking dilemmas. The participants from the Secondary Education program were Patricia Grace Pangilinan, Erica Lorenz Sadang, Um Song Eun, Greg Louise Binag, Shamira Macoto, Kim Yong Sung, Ramon Cuello, Jaasiel Boloabio, John Carlo Bunsay, and Pauline Marie Gervacio, led by their adviser Dr. Maria Cequeña.

   Meanwhile, Czarina Dominguez presented through poster exhibition her group’s paper about Filipino preschool teachers’ perception of Education for Sustainable Development. The group of Jean Mari Atinaja, Cindy Ayende, Hannah Kristina Chua, Maritoni Angela Mangubat were awarded “Best Poster Presentation” in the said conference for their paper entitled, “I Choose You: Children With Exceptionalities’ Playmate Preferences”. Their adviser was Ms. Katherine Chua, also a delegate in the said conference.

   The participants for the virtual presentations were Chelsea Gayle Pascual, Jara Mae Medina, and Elementary Education professor Ms. Carmina Vicente. Pascual’s paper examined special needs children’s responses to prompting. Medina’s study uncovered preschoolers’ view on the joy of learning numeracy, and Vicente’s article is about perceptions of practice teachers on sustainable development.

   The College of Education also participated in the 2nd SIMPI (Sustainability Initiatives: Case Studies in Malaysia, Philippines and Indonesia) and International Conference on Urban Studies Joint Conference, held on May 4-5, 2016 at the Far Eastern University, Manila. The conference was organized by the Far Eastern University in collaboration with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. Michelle Cotorno, Karizza Mae Manalad, Yanah Jon Princess Torreses, Czarine Patrice Domingo and Pamela Tricia Lastimosa, together with their adviser Ms. Carmina S. Vicente, presented their paper entitled "Wheeling and Able: A Phenomenological Study on How a Select Group of Filipino Preschool Children View Recycling".

   Other undergraduate researches in Teacher Education, Nutrition & Dietetics, Food Technology and Library and Information Science were presented during the 2nd Dr. Lourdes Custodio Research Festival which was held on April 19, 2016. The research festival, named in honor of the late Dr. Lourdes Custodio – the first female/lay dean of the College of Education and pioneer of the personalized education system in the Education High School – was organized in support of Project CORD (Creating Opportunities for Research Dissemination). Prof. Rattan Sae Lao of Thammasat University, Thailand, gave a short plenary talk about research writing at the Benavides Auditorium. Simultaneously, the poster exhibits were formally opened at the ground and second floor lobbies of the Albertus Magnus Building. Parallel sessions followed at the Education multimedia classrooms. A total of 65 researches were presented.
