The UST College of Education took home four awards in the Philippine Association for Teacher Education (PAFTE) – National Capital Region Dakilang Parangal Awards which was held on March 5, 2016 at the Olivarez College. The awards recognized the noteworthy achievements of teachers, students and school organizations from the different teacher education institutions.
Asst. Prof. Erlyn Geronimo, the supervising teacher for mathematics of the Education High School was selected as Best Student Teaching Supervisor. UST’s Teacher Capacity Building Program on ICT Integration in the Classroom was chosen as Best Innovative Teacher Education Initiative. This was a joint project of the College of Education and the UST Educational Technology Center which served as a Resource Distribution Training Center of UNESCO-Bangkok. The award was received by the UNESCO-RDTC Coordinator of the College of Education, Ms. Marichou Beltran. The Best Published Research (Student Category) went to Rowena Marie Chua, Geline Cruz, Jeanno Lorenz G. Dinglasan, Mary Noll Giliberte, and Mary Ann Martin, with Dr. Allan de Guzman as co-author/adviser. Their undergraduate research paper entitled, “When is similar different? When is different similar? A review of language assessment foci of selected Philippine English language textbooks” was published in the Korean Journal of Educational Policy. The Best Published Research (Faculty Category) went to Dr. de Guzman for his paper entitled, “The relations of employability skills to career adaptability among technical school students” published in the Journal of Vocational Behavior. Additionally, a special citation was given to the UST College of Education as Top Performing School in the Licensure Examinations for Teachers.
The aforementioned awards speak well of the effectiveness of the instructional and research programs, projects and activities of the College of Education. In the previous month, Thomasian pre school education students were declared top winners in two categories of the interschool competition for Education students organized by the PAFTE-NCR. The competitions were held during the 2nd PAFTE-NCR Student Teachers’ Summit held at the Social Hall of National Teachers College in Quiapo, Manila. Relisa Ann Abaca and Angelica Ebuen garnered first place in the audio visual presentation and essay-writing contest, respectively. Meanwhile, UST placed second in photography, instructional material making and videotaped teaching demonstration. Josen Nichole Teope, Yanah Jon Princess Torreses and Alanis Mindana represented UST in the said categories. With sterling performances, UST emerged as the overall champion. Also in the same summit, Education Dean Dr. Allan de Guzman delivered an informative lecture on evidence-based pedagogies to PAFTE members, while Education faculty member Mr. Louie Dasas presented his paper concerning the use of web tools in improving students’ conceptions in science.
